Celebrating Cervantes

April 23 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Spanish novelist Miguel Cervantes, author of Don Quixote.

Special Collections holds over a dozen rare copies of Don Quixote in Spanish, French, and English, from early 17th century English translations to fine press versions illustrated by modern artists. Here are some of our favorites!

The oldest copy of Don Quixote in the library is the second edition of the complete English translation of the novel (Vault Collection 863.32 D71te 1652):

The most recent copy acquired by Special Collections was printed at the Arion Press in 2009. The illustrator was William T. Wiley (Hoyem Press Collection 2009 no.3):

We also have a copy of the edition illustrated by Salvador Dalí (Rare Book Collection 863.32 D71d 1965) and a copy of the deluxe edition published by the Real Academia Española in 1780 (Vault Collection 863.32 Ib1 1780).
