The papers of James E. Talmage housed here in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections include a complete set of his personal journals, several pieces of correspondence, and various other materials from all aspects of his life, including academics, professional, ecclesiastical, and personal. We are pleased to announce that Elder Talmage’s journals from 1879-1911, comprising twelve volumes, have recently been digitized and are available online. These diaries include an autobiography of his youth growing up in England, and include nearly daily entries covering his life from his time as a student at Brigham Young Academy, through his graduate school and academic career. They also include his marriage, family and professional life up to his calling as a member of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Descriptions of the contents of his other journals and pocket diaries spanning the remainder of his life are also available. All of Elder Talmage’s journals and papers housed in Perry Special Collections are open to researchers in our Reading Room.
