Victorian Book of the Month: May flowers edition

Floriology, also called flower language or flower symbolism, was popular during the Victorian period. Sentiments were attached to specific varieties and colors of flowers, so that giving or wearing flowers was a way to send a symbolic message.

forget me notA number of books on the flower language were published throughout the Victorian period. Some even included illustrations and poetic verse which evoked the sentiment attached to a particular blossom. Our featured book, Wild Flowers and their Teachings, is rather unique in that it includes 38 specimens of flowers and other plants! It was produced in 1845 to raise money for a village parsonage near St Albans in Hertfordshire, England.

Other works in this vein can be found by searching the library catalog for the subject terms “flower language,” “flowers–symbolic aspects,” or “flowers in literature.”
