April Commencement 2011

Tomorrow is graduation and thousands of young students will receive their diplomas and embark on the next phase of their lives. Hopefully, they will look back fondly on their experiences at Brigham Young University and be able to reflect on the remarkable growth that they have made–academically and spiritually. It is this intermingling of the sacred and the secular that makes Brigham Young University such a unique place. Lessons learned about how to flavor their lifelong learning with the sacred will influence the rest of their lives. As students participate in the commencement activities tomorrow they will have one last opportunity to experience one of the most unique aspects of a BYU education–the opportunity to listen and learn from a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Presiding at the commencement activities will be Elder Richard G. Scott.

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Students would be well advised to listen and observe carefully what it means to be a disciple-scholar as modeled by Elder Scott. Elder Scott’s remarks will be made available for students to ponder and learn from through the Speeches of the Year website. Commencement addresses can be selected by utilizing the dropdown menu “By Topic” and selecting “Commencement.” Other commencement addresses are available to learn from on this site as well. If a particular commencement address is not available through the Speeches website, it may be available in the University Archives as part of UA 862 Brigham Young University Commencement Addresses, 1930-2006. This collection contains speeches delivered at the commencement ceremonies at Brigham Young University. It is arranged chronologically and is not comprehensive.

If you would like to learn more about how to access commencement speeches held in the Brigham Young University Archives, please contact the University Archivist at (801) 422-5821 or gordon_daines@byu.edu.
