American Archives Month Activities 2019

 

The BYU Library is celebrating American Archive Month with a series of archive related experiences.

 

Week 1

Archives Month activities kick off on Thursday, October 3, when the library’s Head Conservator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, Chris McAfee, hosts a “Conservation Roadshow.” The public is invited to bring their own rare books, diaries, documents, and photographs to the library for evaluation and advice on preservation. 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in HBLL 3452.

 

Week 2

The library’s film curator, Ben Harry, connects archives and Halloween with a public screening of the classic film The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Friday, October 11 at 7:00 pm in the Alice Louise Reynolds Auditorium on level 1. The public is invited and admission is free.

 

Week 3

The library will host its annual Hold a First Edition Book of Mormon day from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 17. Each year the archivists go to the library’s vaults and bring out one or two copies of the famous book. Everyone is invited to hold a copy and learn the story of how and where it was made. Participants also get a quick lesson in rare book handling and care.

 

Week 4

“Home Movie Day” is an opportunity for people to bring their family movies in to see them projected and to get advice on how to care for them. Curator Ben Harry will have 8mm and other format film projectors available. Please note: This event takes place in the Wilkinson Student Center room 3223 (WSC). Saturday, October 26 from noon until 4:00 pm.

 

Week 5

Folklorists Julie Swallow, Jill Terry Rudy, and Eric A. Eliason. will present “The William A. Wilson Folklore Archives and The Three Nephites: 60 Years of Looking for Tracks in the Snow.” October 28 at noon in the Alice Louise Reynolds Auditorium on level 1 of the Library.

Curator Greg Seppi is curating an exhibition of German prints that will be on display on level 1 of the Library throughout the month of October.

 

Special Collections business hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
