From Room D to Harold B Lee: Celebrating Libraries at BYU

The Harold B. Lee Library will host seven short term exhibits in 2011 to highlight the collections gathered since BYU’s first library was organized in room D of the Education Building on the old lower campus. The first exhibit, a Cabinet of Curiosities, will open in January of 2011 and will feature some of the unusual artifacts that have made their way into the library. Movie memorabilia, hippo teeth, war relics and tools of intellectual creation will be displayed.

The next exhibit, Library on a Laptop, will open in late February. It will look at how we create virtual libraries by collecting scholarly materials from faculty and digitizing historic publications. This behind the scenes look at digital libraries will follow the work to the library’s digitization team who recently scanned their one millionth page.

Other exhibits will include a look at the art in the library, our collection of papyri, the University Archives, Mormon Migration, and highlights of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections. These exhibits will be located on level 3 of the library and are part of the library’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the current library building.
