Documentary Review | Tell Them We Are Rising

Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (PN 1995.96 .E2 T45 2018) is a moving documentary produced by PBS that brings to light the struggles and victories of African Americans in the education system. Historically, slaves were kept from receiving an education because it could empower them. This was the driving force behind why numerous Black colleges were founded and how it would impact the civil rights movement and change history.

It has heart wrenching scenes where in the past African Americans had unequal opportunities to thrive in a college environment. They were separated and humiliated by their peers at school, but this documentary showcased their triumph, hope, and survival. It’s particularly touching when the documentary shifts forward to a modern day perspective and has clips of current students who are benefiting from the historically Black colleges. I would recommend this documentary to anyone who has interest in civil right movements or wants to watch a documentary that shows people who are empowered by education.
