Humanities Periodical Indexes


Indexes to articles in scholarly Humanities journals. Try several of these, and most important, search indexes of specific subjects such as art, literature, theatre, languages or linguistics, history, religion, philosophy, etc.

American Humanities Index. 1975-present. Indexes scholarly journals in the arts and humanities. Does not duplicate what is indexed by the Humanities Abstracts. Covers 260 journals. Periodicals Reference AI 3 .A278

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science). 1980+. Indexes over 1,300 international arts and humanities journals. Also indexes all references cited within the articles. Print version at Humanities Reference. Updated weekly.

Dissertation Abstracts International. 1938-present. It is possible to order dissertations from UMI. Gen Ref AC801.X1 C67 and .X1 D57. Online version entitled “Digital Dissertations” (Pro-Quest Direct).

FRANCIS. 1984+ Indexes and abstracts multilingual and inter-disciplinary information in the humanities and social sciences. Emphasis on current trends in European and world literature.

ISSHP (Index to Social Sciences & Humanities Proceedings). 1979-1994 in print, 1994-2000 on CD-ROM. Access to papers presented at conferences, seminars, symposia, and published as proceedings.

SIRS Renaissance. Provides current information on architecture, design, culture, film, radio, television, video, literature, music, performing arts, philosophy, religion, and visual arts from more than 700 domestic and
international sources. Articles may have graphics.

General Periodical Indexes


Good source for current articles from “popular” magazines and newspapers. Several sources include full-text articles and images. Try Pro-Quest Direct, EBSCO (Academic Search Elite), and Academic Universe.

Other Subjects


If your topic involves other subjects, make sure to check periodical indexes in those subjects such as Art, Film, Political Science, Social Science, History (U.S. and european), Education, Psychology, etc.

Once you find references to articles on your topic, you need to look up the periodical title in the Library Catalog, in order to find the call number for the periodical!

PERIODICALS ARE LOCATED IN THE PERIODICALS ROOM, Level 2, and ANNUALS are shelved with books.
