Searching the Library Catalog
An efficient way to search the Lee Library catalog is to use Library of Congress (LC) subject headings with an "alphabetic search". If you are uncertain about a specific subject headings, try a "keyword search" using words you feel describe your topic. Look at the subject headings under "details" of your results list.

Library Catalog Search Features
  • Alphabetic - Searches the subject field in the record (what the book is about).
  • Keyword - Searches every field in the record (typically retrieves numerous titles, but the material is not always relevant).
  • Advanced Keyword - Allows you to customize your search, and to look for words in the title, subject, or elsewhere in the record. Also allows you narrow your search by a library, language, format, or location.
  • Subject Links - When you're looking at a book record in the HBLL catalog, check the highlighted subject links, you may want to click on one to bring up other titles in the HBLL that deal with the same subject.

Interlibrary Loan
Books or journals not held by the Lee Library may be obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. You must register for an interlibrary loan account in order to request material. Books are sent free of charge and can be kept for 2 weeks. Journal articles are sent as pfd files to you interlibrary loan account.

A multidisciplinary database that includes citations for articles in most areas of academic study. Sources are drawn from over 3,200 journals, with almost 1,300 peer-reviewed titles. Full-text is available for over 1,800 publications. Coverage is from 1985 to the present.

ComAbstracts
A database of article abstracts, books, bibliographic records, and other sources of relevance to researchers, scholars, and students interested in fields related to human communication studies (mass communication, human interaction, rhetoric, health communication, communication and new media, journalism, communication history, etc.). Expanded and updated throughout the year, with some coverage back to early 1970.

Communications & Mass Media Complete (EBSCO)
This database originated with the acquisition and subsequent merging of two popular databases in the fields of communication and mass media studies -- CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA)), and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Pennsylvania State University). Provides indexing and select full text covering various aspects of communication and mass media. Some coverage from as far back as the early decades of the 20th century.

ProQuest Research Library
ABI/INFORM Global; PA Research II; ProQuest Newspapers. ABI/INFORM Global searches 1,000 premier world business periodicals (many available in full-text), and provides information on 60,000+ companies. PA Research II searches over 1,800 popular and scholarly periodical articles and selected newspapers in all disciplines with many articles appearing in full-text. ProQuest Newspapers indexes ober 300 U.S. and international news sources, including over 150 major U.S. and international newspapers.

Social Science Collection (ProQuest)
Includes the full-text of 16 journals published by SAGE and participating societies, some journals going back twenty years, encompassing over 4,200 articles. It covers such subjects as Journalism, Public Opinion, Political Communication, Mass Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Cultural Studies / Intercultural Communication, Television / Film Studies, Media Studies, Business Communication, Organizational / Management Communication, Written Communication, Rhetoric, and Literacy Studies.

ERIC (EBSCO)
The world's largest source of education information, contains more than one million abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and practice. Available through several different vendors with linking to EDRS for full text access. Updated weekly. 1966 to date. Indexing/abstracting also freely available via the Educators Reference Desk (http://www.eric.ed.gov/).

Factiva
Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company, provides global content. Includes the Dow Jones and Reuters Newswires and numerous newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post. Also a global business information database with multiple language interfaces and multilingual content covering nearly 8, 000 sources.

Gallup Brain
This database contains an archive of Gallup polls taken over the last 70+ years . Poll topics include public opinion of elections, corporate issues, and other social concerns. Records include survey questions and answers with corresponding respondent percentages. Coverage is from 1935 to present.

Humanities Full Text (EBSCO)
Updated four times a week, indexes and abatracts over 500 periodicals in art, archaeology, communications, film, theatre, literature, etc. Full-text for only 180 items since 1995. Includes reviews of books, films, plays, and links to websites, and original works of fiction, drama, and poetry.

JSTOR
JSTOR is a journal archive that focuses on the humanities, social sciences, and more recently the science which have proven themselves to be vital in these disciplines. Journals in JSTOR are full-text going back to their first issue (in some cases to the late 1800's). Be aware that you must use other sources to find the most current two years of any publication archived in JSTOR. The articles are retrieved in Adobe Acrobat and so appear as they did when they were originally published.

LexisNexis Academic
Provides more than 9.5 million documents from over 18,300 sources, including company profiles and financial reports, government transcripts, trade journals and academic and legal databases. Updated with full-text documents from general interest wire services, newspapers, and magazines from around the world.

MEDLINE (EBSCO)
Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the original version is called PUBMED (public version of MEDLINE). References are added from over 4700 medical journals and publications and includes the years 1966 to present. MEDLINE references are obtained from peer reviewed journals and covers subjects in medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care services, and clinical and pre-clinical medical sciences. MEDLINE in PUBMED is updated daily, MEDLINE in EBSCO is updated monthly. The links in PUBMED do not always take you to the full-text of the article. The links in MEDLINE EBSCO take you to the full-text of the article, or to the Lee Library journal finder record which provides links to the article, or links to the option of requesting a copy of an article through interlibrary loan.

PsycINFO (EBSCO)
Provides access to international literature in psychology and related disciplines. Includes literature from an array of disciplines related to psychology. Includes psychological research and its applications. The sources include over 1,800 professional journals, chapters, books, reports, theses and dissertations, published internationally. Additionally, there are more than 8 million cited references in 185,000 journal articles, books, and book chapters.

Social Science Abstracts (EBSCO)
Contains indexing for more than 500 publications covering a wide range of interdisciplinary fields anthropology, economics, gender studies, gerontology, political science, and sociology. Indexing coverage dates back to 1983, and abstracting dates back to 1994.

Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI): Web of Science (ISI)
Contains the references cited by the authors of journal articles in the social sciences. In addition to reference searching, also allows searching by author, topic, source title and address. Coverage from 1956 to date.

LexisNexis Academic

Ethnic NewsWatch (ProQuest)
Interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full-text database of newspapers, magazines and journals from ethnic, minority, and native presses. An average of 7,500 articles from 240 publications are added to Ethnic NewsWatch each month. Coverage begins in 1960 and continues through the present.

EBSCO Databases
Contains the full text of the most recent 30 days of business news wires from all over the world. Information provided by these sources covers business, political, economic, and other diverse, international news events. Updated daily.

British Library Online Newspaper Archive (Gale)
Fully searchable newspapers in the online collection of the British Library. Includes Daily News; News of the World; Weekly Dispatch; Manchester Guardian; and Penny Illustrated.

CRL's CCC Camp Newspapers Database
Provides access to the Center for Research Libraries' collection of newspapers and newsletters published by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. c. 1934-1942.

New York Times Archive (1851-2006)
Includes scans of over 3 million pages dating back to 1851 and continuing through 2004.

Times (London) Digital Archive (1785-1985) (Gale)
The entire newspaper, 1785-1985, is captured, with all articles, advertisements, illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching. Can be searched with keywords and hit-term highlighting to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page.
