Central and South America

This guide contains websites, government sites, and paid databases that have international statistical information. You may also do a subject search in the Library Catalog for categories such as economic statistics, demographic statistics, financial statistics, corporation statistics, and industry statistics. You can also search in the catalog for a specific country by putting the country name and then "statistics." For example, "mexico statistics" or "china statistics."

  • National Trade Data Bank -- County Commercial Guides (All countries)
    The country commercial guides provide information for investors and exporters about other countries. This information includes economic and trade statistics, climate for investment, investment opportunities,political environment, guides to doing business in that country, etc. Click on the country of your choice and a list of reports will appear.
  • Business Source Premier—Country Reports (All countries)
    This database allows you to search country reports on the economy, politics, investment climate, and careers of the country. Includes OECD economic surveys. Click on “Country Reports” and type the name of the country in the search box.
  • United Nations Statistical Division (Country members)
    This reference book is drawn from the World Bank Africa Database and provides basic indicators, population, GDP, industry, financial, and trade statistics. Available at Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 800 .A1 A356
  • CIA-World Factbook (All countries)
    Provides a country-by-country listing of basic statistical and factual information. Economic statistical information includes GDP, Real GDP growth rate, per capita GDP, GDP composition by sector, poverty line, household income, unemployment, inflation rate, public debt, commodity exports and imports, exchange rates, etc. These statistics are given for only one recent year.
  • U.S.Department of State—Country Background Notes (All countries)
    Background notes include facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of independent states, some dependencies, and areas of special sovereignty
  • World Development Indicators Online (All countries)
    This database by the World Bank Group contains economic, financial, and demographic statistics for 226 countries.

  • International Financial Statistics (All countries)
    Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Information Reference Collection call numbers HG 61 .I57 and HG 3881 .I626. These books, published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), provide financial statistics by country.
  • Global Development Finance (All countries)
    The World Bank’s Global Development Finance database contains more than 200 debt and financial indicators for over 130 countries. This database allows you to graph several financial indicators for various years in the same chart. Some of the indicators include Total debt stocks, total debt flows, long-term debt, interest payments, disbursements, debt rations, currency composition of debt, etc. Also available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Information Reference Collection call number HJ 8899 .W672.

    This database by the World Bank Group contains economic, financial, and demographic statistics for 226 countries.

  • UNESCO Institute for Statistics (Country members)
    The UNESCO Institute for Statistics is the statistical branch of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture. It collects statistics on education, literacy, culture and communication, and science and technology. On the left panel you will see a section heading called “statistics.” From this section you can access the database, statistical tables, country profiles, and fast facts.
  • United Nations Statistical Division (Country members)
    The Statistics Division compiles statistics from many international sources and produces global updates. Information in this page includes demographic statistics such as population, birth rates, mortality, marriage, health, education, etc.
  • Population Reference Bureau (All countries)
    This page provides demographic, health, environmental, and women statistics. In addition, it has links to other statistics pages and resources.
  • City Populations (All countries)
    Population of main cities in each country in America.
  • Earth Trends City Data (All countries)
    PDF Table that contains statistics on selected city-level indicators for many countries.
  • Earth Trends Data Tables (All countries)
    PDF Table that contains population, health, and human well-being statistics for many countries.
  • Earth Trends--World Resources Institute (All countries)
    This page contains mainly environmental statistics, but it is also an excellent source of demographic, business, and economic statistics. You can go to the searchable database, select the statistic you need, and then select the country or region.

    This database gives you information on South and Central American companies including history, financials, rankings, and articles when this information is available. Click on "Business and Company Resource Center, then click on "company." In the "state/country" search box type the name of the South or Central American country. Click "search" and a name of companies will be listed by revenue in descending order. Click the company's name to see more information on the company.

    A directory of North and South American companies owners and subsidiaries. Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov/Info Reference Area call number HG 4081 .Z65 W48

    This database gives you company information such as financials, competitors, histories, business description, contact information, stock prices and charts, and articles on the company when this information is available. click on the "Companies/Markets" tab. You can enter the name or ticker symbol of the company and click "search." To see a list of companies, click on "company screening," click on "Location" then select "South America" or "Central America" and select a country. Click submit and you will see a list of companies in that region/country. By clicking on the name of the company, a menu will appear for information on that company.

Even though it might not give you very detailed information and statistics, it is a good start to research industries in different countries.
