North America Statistics

This guide contains websites, government sites, and paid databases that have international statistical information. You may also do a subject search in the Library Catalog for categories such as economic statistics, demographic statistics, financial statistics, corporation statistics, and industry statistics. You can also search in the catalog for a specific country by putting the country name and then "statistics." For example, "mexico statistics" or "china statistics."

  • National Trade Data Bank
    Off Campus Access
    The country commercial guides provide information for investors and exporters about other countries. This infomation includes economic and trade statistics, climate for investment, political environment, guides to doing business in that country, etc. Click on the link "country commercial guides" and select a country.
  • Business Source Premier (EBSCO)
    Off Campus Access
    This database allows you to search country reports on the economy, politics, investment climate, and careers of the country. It includes OECD economic surveys.
  • OECD economic surveys (Online)
    Off Campus Access
    This is a publication by the Organization for Economic Development that gives economic information and statistics for its 30 country members.
  • United Nations Statistical Division
    The Statistics Division compiles statistics from many international sources and produces global updates. Information on this page includes GDP, GDP per capita, by expenditure, by economic sector, and GNP statistics.
  • CIA World Factbook
    It provides a country-by-country listing of basic statistical and factual information. Statistical economic information includes GDP, real GDP, GDP growth rate, per capita GDP, GDP composition by sector, poverty line, household income, unemployment, inflation rate, public debt, exchange rate, imports and exports, etc. These statistics are given for only one recent year.
  • U.S. Department of State-Country Background Notes
    Background notes include facts about the land, people, history, economy, politics, and foreign relations of countries.
  • World Development Indicators
    Off Campus Access
    This database by the World Bank Group contains economic, financial, and demographic statistics for 226 countries.
  • Handbook of North America Industry: NAFTA and the Economies of its Member Nations
    Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info reference collection call number HF 1746 .H36x. This book gives economic and industrial statistics for Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

  • International Financial Statistics
    Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info reference collection call numbers HG 61 .I57 and HG 3881 .I626. These books, published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) provide financial statistics by country. You can also visit the IMF website and search by country.
  • Global Development Finance
    Off Campus Access
    The World Bank's Global Development Finance databse contains more than 200 debt and financial indicators for over 30 countries. This database allows you to graph several financial indicators for various years in the same chart. Some of the indicators are total debt stocks, debt flows, long-term debt, interest payments, debt ratios, currency composition of debt, etc.

    This database by the World Bank Group contains economic, financial, and demographic statistics for 226 countries.

  • UNESCO Institute for Statistics
    The UNESCO Institute for Statistics is the statistical branch of the United Nations for Education, Science, and culture. It collects statistics on education, literacy, culture and communication, and science and technology.
  • United Nations Statistical Division
    The Statistics Division compiles statistics from many international sources. Information on this page includes demographic statistics such as population, birth rates, mortality, marriage, health, education,etc.
  • Population Reference Bureau
    This page contains demographic, health, environmental, and women statistics by country. In addition, it provides links to other statistics pages and resources.
  • City Populations
    Population of main cities in different countries.
  • Earth Trends City Data
    PDF table that contains statistics on selected city-level indicators for many countries.
  • Earth Trends Data Tables
    PDF table that contains population, health, and human well-being statistics for many countries.
  • Earth Trends-World Resources Institute
    This page contains mainly environmental statistics, but it is also an excellent source of demographic, business, and economic statistics. You can go to the searchable database, select the statistic you need, and then select the country or region.

  • Business & Company Resource Center (Gale)
    Off Campus Access
    This database gives you information on companies including history, financials, rankings, and articles when this information is available. Click on "Business and Company Resource Center", then click on "Company." In the state/country search box type the name of the country and click "Search." The companies will be listed by revenue in descending order. Click on the company's name to see more information on the company.
  • Factiva
    Off Campus Access
    This database gives you company information such as financials, competitors, business description, contact information, stock prices and charts, histories, and articles on the company when this information is available. Click on the "Companies/Markets" tab. You can enter the name or the ticker symbol of the company and click "Search." To see a list of companies in North America, click on the "Companies/Markets" tab and then click on "company screening," click on "Location" then select "North American Countries," select the country and click on "Submit." You will see a list of companeis in that countri. By clicking on the name of the company, a menu will appear for information on that company. This database also allows you to search for companies in a specific industry or screen with other criteria.

    Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info reference collection call number HF 1746 .H36x. This book gives economic and industrial statistics for Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
  • Business & Company Resource Center (Gale)
    Off Campus Access
    This database gives you information on companies including history, financials, rankings, and articles when this information is available. Click on "Business and Company Resource Center", then click on "Company."In the "Industry code/ Description" box type the industry or the code. In the state/country search box type the name of the country and click "Search." The companies will be listed by revenue in descending order. Click on the company's name to see more information on the company. For an industry overview in the United States, go to the "Industry" tab.

    This database allows you to search industry overviews for different countries. Even though it might not give you very detail information and statistics, it is a good start to research industries in other countries. Make your selection in the "Industry" and "Geo Region" menus. In the "Document Type," select "Industry Overview"

  • The Bank of Canada provides statistical information on the Canadian economy and finance including statistics on monetary policy, interest rates, exchange rates, inflation, etc.

  • Statistics Canada collects information on major themes such as agriculture, environment, health, manufacturing, prices, primary industries, social conditions, and travel and tourism.
  • International Trade Canada
  • International Trade Canada (ITCan) supports the development of trade by providing services to exporters, developing policy, and by attracting investment in Canada. It has a section on trade, investment, and economic statistics.

  • This website provides information on economic and fiscal policies, budget, financial institutions and markets, taxes, etc.
  • FP Markets, Canadian Demographics 2005
  • This reference guide on Canada's cities and towns provides statistics on population by age and sex, housing types, marital status, private housholds, families, income, labor force, language, schooling, etc. Available in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info reference area call number HC 111 .F56x 2005.
  • Canadian Key Business Directory

  • Available in print in the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info reference collection, call number HF 3223 .C24. This book is a business directory of Canadian companies.

  • Banco de Mexico

  • The Bank of Mexico provides statistical information on the Mexican economy and financy including statistics such as GDP, unemployment, interest rates, currency, etc. Trade and industry data is also included. Website available in English.
  • Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica
    The Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica (INEGI) coordinates the national statistical and the geographic information systems of Mexico and promotes the informatics development of Mexico. It provides demographic (population, health, education, etc.) environmental, scientific and tehcnological, and economic statistics for Mexico and its individual states.
