This guide contains websites, government sites, and paid databases that have statistical information for the United States along with its states and counties. Some of these sources also contain international information.

  • Economagic
    This resource provides economic statistics and states what types each government agency provides. Economagic will also disclose specifically the source for the statistics. Includes current and past GDPs, unemployment rates, CPIs, etc. All information can be easily transformed from one format to another.
  • Census Bureau U.S. Economic Information
    Contains current and past economic information for the U.S., individual states, metro areas, counties, and ZIP codes. It includes the U.S. Economic Census, statistics on businesses, trade, and others.
  • Business Statistics of the United States
    This book available electronically provides statistics on national income, industrial production, prices, income distriburtion and poverty, consumer income and spending, savings, employment, energy, money and financial markets. It also contains industry profiles and historical economics statistics for selected indicators.
  • Economic Indicators Handbook
    Available in Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 103 .E26. This handbook offers U.S. general and regional statistics such as GDP, price index on GDP for a certain year, and consumer price indexes information.
  • Economic Statistics Briefing Room of The White House Webpage
    This website provides links to important information on government statistics in topics such as employment, income, prices, production, transportation, output, international trade, etc. This resource provides excellent graphs.

  • The FedStats Homepage
    This website provides demographic information easily separated by state, county, and city. This site also has a myriad of links on statistics for various subjects listed alphabetically. Statistics such as percentage of American Indians and Alaska Native persons in a state/U.S., women-owned firms, people per square mile, etc.

  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    Available electronically from 1995-present, or print at the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info Reference Desk. This resource, which has been in publication since 1878, is the standard summary of statistical information on topics like GDP, where the median population of the United States is located, family income, percentage of foreign students at universities within a country, etc.

  • U.S. Census Bureau Homepage
    This resource includes information of the U.S. Census such as poverty in the U.S., vacancy rates, homeownership, etc.

  • Economic Indicators
    AThis is a compilation prepared for the Joint Economic Committee and provides economic information on prices, wages, production, business activitiy, purchacing power, credit, money and Federal finance. Data available from 1995-present.

    Provides CPI Information and detailed CPI statistics. It includes a link to an inflation calculator.

  • NASA
    Inflation calculators page for each year back to 1800.


    Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
  • U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis
    This website provides international, national, state, and local economic statistics. Such topics as GDP by industry, personal income average per state, and metropolitan areas with lowest income are some examples of the types of statistics one can find on the website.

  • Business Statistics of the United States
    This electronic book provides statistics on national income, industrial production, prices, income distribution and poverty, consumer income and spending, savings, employment, energy, money and financial markets. It also contains industry profiles and historical economics statistisc for selected indicators.

    The BLS is the principle fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics.

  • Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS)
    This website is part of the U.S. Department of Labor. The LAUS program produces monthly and annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for Census regions and divisions, states, counties, metropolitan areas, and many cities, by place of residence.
  • United States Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics
    This resource provides great statistical information regarding labor, wages, employment, price indexes, etc. It includes all statistical information that that DOL records.

  • U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook Online
    This website provides information on the median, mean, and range of salaries for different occupations. It also provides useful links to find additional information regarding specific occupations.

    This site provides daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual releases of economic indicators, busines and household finance, interest rates, exchange rates, bank structure, etc.

  • United States Department of the Treasury
    This website allows you to browse information by topics such as accounting and budgeting, currency and coins, enforcement, financial markets, general interest, international, small business, taxes, and technology.

    Available in print at the Mgt/Econ/Gov Info Reference Desk, or electronically at the above website for information from 1995 - present. This resource, which has been in publication since 1878, is the standard summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. This resource includes statistical information on topics such as banking, finance, and insurance.

  • International Financial Statistics (All countries)
    Available in print in Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HG 61.I57 and HG 3881. I626, or electronically at the above website. Provides data publised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which provides financial statistics by country.
  • Global Devopment Finance (All countries)
    Available in Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HJ 8899 .W672, or electronically by clicking on the above link. This database contains more than 200 debt and financial indicators for over 130 countries. This database also allows the user to graph several financial indicators over multiple years. Some of the indicators include: total debt stocks, total debt flows, lont-term debt, interest payments, disbursements, debt rations, currency composition of debt, etc.

  • World Development Indicators Online (All countries)
    This World Bank Group database contains economic, financial, and demographic statistics for 226 countries.

  • Business Statistics of the United States

    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HA 203 .C68. This resource contains key demographic and economic data for each U.S. state, county, metropolatan area, Congressional district, and for all U.S. cities with a year 2000 population of 25,000 or more.
  • The American Tally
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HA 201.122 .A45x 2003. Provides statistics and comparative rankings for U.S. cities with populations over 10,000. Statistics include indicators for population, education, language, immigration, income, employment, and housing for over 3000 U.S. cities.
  • Current Population Survey (CPS)
    The CPS is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The survey has been conducted for more than 50 years. Estimates obtained from the CPS include employment, unemployment, earnings, hours of work, etc.

  • United Nations Statistical Division (Country members)
    The Statistics Division compiles statistics from many international sources and produces global updates. Information in this page includes demohttp://www.lib.byu.edu/business/statistics/United%20States.htmgraphic statistics such as population, birth rates, mortality, marraige, health, education, etc.

  • Population Reference Bureau (All countries)
    This website provides demographics on health, the environment, women's statistics, etc. and also provides links to other statistical resources.

  • American Incomes: Demographics of Who Has Money
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 79 .I5 A44x 2001. This book contains all types of tables and graphs regarding American income for the past decade.
  • American Generations: Who they are. How they live. What they think
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 110 .C6 M545 2003. This reference book explains the differences in the many generations that make up our society such as the Millennial Generation, Generation X, Baby Boom Generation, Swing Generatoin, and World War II Generation; provides statistics for each group.
  • Generation X: Americans Aged 18 to 34
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 110 .C6 M544x 2001. This book focuses on the statistics of the Generation Xers--the people in 2001 that were from ages 18 to 34. It gives vital data on how the attitudes and habits of the Generations Xers influenced the market and political views.

  • Demographics of the U.S. Trends and Projections - 2nd Ed. 2003
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HB 849.49 .R875x 2003. This reference book provides excellent U.S. demographic information back to 1950. It shows current demographic trends and future projections.
  • Editor & Publisher Market Guide 2004
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HF 5905 .E38 2004. This directory contains data on more than 1,600 daily newspaper cities in the United States and Canada; everything from ethnic breakdowns to shopping mall information to tap water descriptions is found in this resource. It features 2000 U.S Census population figures, as well as current estimates for population, housing, income data, and retail sales amounts.
  • Housing Statistics of the United States
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HD 7293 .A1 H65 1997. Contains area and national information about topics such as marital status of persons in a certain age range, household income, crowded housing units by state, etc.
  • Household Spending: Who Spends How Much on What
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HC 110 .C6 H68x 2003. This book gives all types of statistics related to how Americans spend their money. It breaks the statistics down into very small subcategories for very specific research.
  • The State Economic, Demographic & Fiscal Handbook 1996
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HB 3505 .A3 B34 1996. Provides past statistical information (1984 - 1996) on population, poverty rates, per capita income, tax rates, and spending programs.

    Vital Statistics
    National Center for Health Statistics
    This website shows all the leading causes of death by race and sex for small U.S. geographic areas referred to as the Health Service Area (HSA's). This includes heart disease, cancer, motor vehicle accidents, etc. It also has statistics on birth, mortality, fetal death, marriages and divorces, etc.

  • National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
    NCES is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that is related to education in the U.S. and other nations.
  • U.S. Census Bureau - Factfinder
    Statistics from the Census of 2000 and 2004 (partial). Scroll down to the Education section for statistics on this subject.
  • UNESCO Institute for Statistics (Country members)
    This UNESCO Insitiute for Statistics is the statistical branch of the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Cultuer (UNESCO). It collects statistics on education, literacy, culture and communication, and science and technology. Upon entering the website, click on the "statistics" heading on the panel to the left; from this section you can access the database, statistical tables, country profiles, and fast facts.

    Off Campus Access

    This database gives you information on companies including history, financials, rankings, and articles when this information is available. Click on “Business and Company Resource Center, then click on “Company.” Type the name of the company in the search box. If you only want to see U.S. companies, in the “state/country” search box type “United States” and click “Search. This will give you over 290,000 companies. Click on the company’s name to see more information on the company.

    Off Campus Access

    This database gives you company information such as financials, competitors, business description, contact information, stock prices and charts, histories, and articles on the company when this information is available. Click on the “Companies/Markets” tab. You can enter the name or the ticker symbol of the company an d click “search.” To see a list of only U.S. companies, click on the “Companies/Markets” tab and then click on “company screening”, click on “Location” then select “North America” and select “United States.” Click on submit and you will see a list of companies in the U.S. By clicking on the name of the company, a menu will appear for information on that company.
  • S&P NetAdvantage
    Off Campus Access

    This database has information for U.S. public and private companies. It includes stock reports and analysis, corporation records which also have stock data and a financial analysis. Click on the “companies” tab, select publication, and enter the name or ticker symbol of the company.
  • Standard & Poor’s SmallCap 600 Guide
    Available in print: Mgt/Econ/Gov Info HG 4915 .S525 2003. Data on earnings, dividends, and share prices and key income and balance sheet statistics for companies in the S&P SmallCap 600 Index.

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
    This website contains statistics for crime in the nation and in the individual states. It also provides statistics on hate crime which involves incidents, offenses, victims, and offenders in reported crimes that were motivated in whole or in part by a bias against the victim's perceived race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability.
