This research guide will guide and direct you in your business research. It will help you find a research topic and show you what books, databases and other resources the library has to offer. This research guide is the most general of all the guides in the Management/Economics section and offers insight to Business, Industry, International Business, Marketing and Investing research.

Books | Interlibrary Loan | Articles | Databases Containing Articles | Company Research | Industry Research | Stocks & Securities Information | Mutual Funds | Product Research | International Research | Business Directories

Books
Check the BYU Library Catalog (http://www.lib.byu.edu/). Click on "Find Books" or simply ask a member of the reference staff for assistance using the catalog. Should you search by "Keyword Search" and the online catalog informs you that this library does not have any books on your subject, you may have used the wrong search terms. In such cases, try other search terms (synonyms) or refer to the Library of Congress Subject Headings books located at most reference desks. This four-volume set will direct you to terms used to index books on the subject. The BYU Journal Finder under "find Articles" may also be used to find titles of journals owned by the library.

To locate books on the shelves, be sure to note the book?s location (http://www.lib.byu.edu/callno.html), call number, and whether or not it is checked out. Ask a member of reference staff for assistance.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
If this Library does not own, or subscribe, to a particular book, magazine, or journal, it may often be obtained from another library. You can request books or journal articles online through the Interlibrary Loan Department (https://illiad.lib.byu.edu/illiad/ill.html), located in the north foyer of level 3.

Articles
Before searching a database, you need to describe your topic, and think of keywords, synonyms, people, or dates. Decide what type of material you need such as popular magazines, scholarly journals, or newspapers. Do you need current information or older material? This will determine the types of material you will need to look for.

Now, go to the main page of the library (http://www.lib.byu.edu/). Click "Find Articles" on the left side and then choose "Business Management" from the drop down box. In this page, you will find databases containing articles, business issues, and information on company, industry, stock, mutual fund, product and international topics. Choose the database appropriate for your research. Click on the ?i? button to learn a little more about each database. If you know the database by name you can use the "Databases A-Z" list at (http://web.lib.byu.edu/subs/dbresources.pl) the link to all the resources is located under "Find Articles". Click on the database to gain access.

Once you choose a database, you will need to read the screens or click "Help" to see how to search a particular database. There is always more than one way to do a search. Start by doing a simple search by typing in keywords and combine your keywords by using the connector AND, then click on ?search?. Look at the results and see if you find an article that will work for your research. When you find a useful article, pay close attention to the subject headings that are attached to the article?searching these terms can bring up other useful articles.

If you receive too many results, you will need to limit your search by adding more keywords or check other ways that the database lets you limit results. Add more terms or use more specific words to narrow your search. If you encounter any problems finding articles for your research, please contact Leticia Camacho, Business Librarian; Charity Martin, Department Assistant, or visit our Mgt/Econ/Gov Info Reference Desk, where friendly student assistants can also help you.

Some databases include full-text articles, and others include the citations and a summary of the article. Use the journal finder to find out if the full text is available, either in another database, in print at our periodical section, or if we have purchase electronic access to this specific journal.

To access the journal finder, go to the main page, click "Find Articles" on the left side, and then choose "Journal Finder", type the name of the journal where your article appears and follow the link. If you do not find the journal then you best option is Interlibrary loan.

Almost all of our electronic databases are available off campus. When you access them through the "Database A-Z" menu, the listing indicates whether or not that database is available off campus. To use a database off campus, you will need a Route Y login and password. If you need assistance on choosing a database please contact Leticia Camacho, Business Librarian, at leticia_camacho@byu.edu.
