Industry Classification:

• Standard Industrial Classification Manual -- Also called North American industry classification system. Many reference works organize industries by their Standard Industrial Classification(SIC). A specific SIC is a four-digit code used to group similar types of businesses together. Not only are all the Census industry statistics arranged by this scheme, but it is widely used by many non government publications such as market guides, directories of companies, and indexes. You will often need to know the SIC for a particular type of business. Available also online.
• North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) -- The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS was developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America.
• Industry and Occupation Classification System -- The purpose of the classification systems used in these indexes is to organize and to make understandable the many thousands of industries and occupations. These systems group titles describing like industries or like occupations into homogeneous categories and assign a code to each category. Both Alphabetical Indexes identify each title by the code of the category to which it is assigned. All Classified Indexes accumulate all the titles assigned to each category and thereby define each category in the Census Bureau classification systems.

Industry Ratios

• Industry Norms & Key business Ratios -- (Print) -- HF 5681 .R25 I53(Latest year in MGT/ECON/GOV INFO, Earlier years in Stacks)-- Contains composite financial information for over 800 different lines of business. Arranged by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and based on data collected by Dun & Bradstreet. The normative financial data obtained from this work can be used as a standard of comparison for the financial data of a specific company. • Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios (Print) -- HF 5681 .R25 768(Latest year in MGT/ECON/GOV INFO, Earlier years in Stacks) -- Provides a precise benchmark for evaluating an individual company's financial performance. The performance data is derived from the latest available IRS figures on U.S. and international companies, and tracks 50 operating and financial factors in 192 industries. The almanac provides competitive norms in actual dollar amounts for revenue and capital factors, as well as important average operating costs in percent of net sales.
• RMA Annual Statement Studies (Print) -- HF 5681.B2R6 (Latest year in MGT/ECON/GOV INFO, Earlier years in Stacks) The Statement Studies contains composite financial data. Financial statement on each industry are showing in common size and are accompanied by widely used ratios.
• S&P NetAdvantage - A comprehensive source of business and investment information, offering on-line access to Standard; Poor's independent research, data and commentary on stocks, bonds, funds, and industries. To access the industry ratios, select the "industry" tab, then under "industry surveys" select your industry, the survey includes Profit Ratios, Balance Sheet Ratios and Equity Ratios.
• FactivaContains company key ratios. The ratio comparison report includes valuation ratios of the company, the industry sector and S&P 500. Search the company name in Companies/Markets and then select the Financial Snapshot (under Reports) or Key Financial Ratios (under Custom Reports) to view key financial ratios.
• Value Line Research CenterThe industry reports include ratios.
• Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)Search in Compustat Global Financial Services. Contains key financial ratios and balance.

• Business & Company Resource Center (Gale) -- Search by Industry. Includes Encyclopedia of American Industries reports, Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries reports, Encyclopedia of Global Industries reports, and the Datamonitor Industry Market Research.
• County Business Patterns -- County Business Patterns is an annual series that provides sub national economic data by industry. The series is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets.
• Statistics of U.S. Business: 2001: All Industries -- By detailed employment size, by year, by state and by industry
• Business and Industry (RDS) (Gale) -- Provides marketing facts and figures for public and private companies, industries, markets, and products for all manufacturing and service industries for both domestic and international subjects.
• -- 1997+ Indexes reports and forecasts prepared by top Wall Street and international brokerage firms. More than 11,000 U.S. and international companies and 53 industries are covered.
• Value Line Research Center -- Comprehensive source of Investment information (stocks, mutual funds, convertibles, etc.) Gives reports on approximately 1,700 stocks, more than 90 industries, the stock market and the economy, pay close attention to the html reports. Utah Industries:

• County Business Patterns -- An annual series that provides sub national economic data by industry. The series is useful for studying the economic activity of small areas; analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmark for statistical series, surveys, and databases between economic censuses. Businesses use the data for analyzing market potential, measuring the effectiveness of sales and advertising programs, setting sales quotas, and developing budgets.
• Statistics of U.S. Business: 2001: All Industries -- By detailed employment size, by year, by state and by industry
• The Utah Economic and Business Review -- Published 6 times per year. Each issue features one or more articles dealing with contemporary trends and developments relating to the Utah economy, along with selected monthly and year-to-date business statistics. The Utah Economic and Business Review is mailed free to subscribers in the United States; outside the U.S. contact BEBR for subscription information.
• Utah Facts -- Discusses issues such as tax rates, utility costs, transportation, education systems, cost of living and quality of life.
• The Utah Data Guide newsletter -- Provides data users with analyses on statistical data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census and other federal, state and local governments in Utah. Trade:

• Trade Development home page -- A portal to Web resources of our industry offices. The industry websites offer sector-specific trade statistics, background documents, current trade updates, links to further industry information, and staff contacts by industry specialty.
• Office of Trade and Economic Analysis -- Carries the latest data on foreign trade and domestic production. Long-time users of the Outlook will recognize the Trends Tables (click on "U.S. Industry Sector Data") covering hundreds of industries, sorted by NAICS or SIC code. The site's many data reports include state-level export numbers and an industry review.
• U. S. Industry & Trade Outlook (Print) -- HC101.U54 (Latest year in MGT/ECON/GOV INFO Ref, Earlier years in Stacks) Published by the Department of Commerce, this work presents projections and current and historical statistics for over 350 major U.S. industries. The term "industries" is broadly defined; the work includes discussions of such "lines of business" as equipment leasing; travel services; information services; and management, consulting, and public relations services. Industry Market Share:

• Mintel Reports (Must create profile, see description) - Mintel offers a series of research reports covering the US and International marketplace. Each market research report provides data & analysis of the competitive landscape, market-share analysis and consumer profiles. Complex demographic issues are broken into easy-to-understand sections, explaining consumer behavior and demonstrating the structure of the market. Excellent for market research, international business case studies, scenario planning and comparative analysis.

• Business & Company Resource Center (Gale)Indexes public and private company data, including contact names, address and telephone numbers, total employees, sales volume and business descriptions. Covers more than 11,000 U.S. & international companies and 53 industries. Includes the latest information drawn from Market Share Reporter & World MarketShare Reporter.

• Business and Industry (RDS) (Gale)Provides marketing facts and figures for public and private companies, industries, markets, and products for all manufacturing and service industries on both domestic and international levels. Includes such information as market share, market size, sales, etc.

• PROMT (Gale)Includes summaries and full text from nearly 1,000 business and trade journals,industry newsletters, newspapers, market research studies, news releases,and investment and brokerage firm reports.
