International Country & Economic Information

This guide contains a list of electronic and print sources designed to assist patrons researching international information. While many of these sources are aimed at researching economic and financial data, several of these sources also contain other cultural and statistical information. This guide is highly related to our statistics guide.

Electronic Sources:

LexisNexis Academic --Go to Business then Company Profiles then click on the arrow button to the right of the source field and select "International Company Reports". Enter the name of the company of interest. (The best reports are under HOOVERS, WORLDSCOPE, and EXTEL CARDS DATABASE.

Business & Company Resource Center (Gale) --"Geography Search" provides the largest companies in a city, state or country. "Company Name or Ticker Symbol" gathers company information from news stories about the company, company history, company financial information, company product information, etc.

CIA World Fact Book-- Released by the US Central Intelligence Agency in 1999. Data is available for more than 260 countries. Includes: map, flag, geographic, population, government, economic, communication, transportation, military, and transnational issue information.

Country Commercial Guides (CCG) -- Contains information on the business and economic situation in foreign countries, including the political climate as it affects U.S. businesses. Once a year, Embassy staff in each country prepare a consistent set of 9 chapters and 7 appendices, including topics such as marketing, trade regulations, investment climate, and business travel. Compiled by the International Trade Administration, US. Department of Commerce. Go to Stat-USA and click on "GLOBUS and NTDB." Then look under Market and Country Research, and click on "Country Commercial Guides."

International Market Reserach and Country Commercial Guides -- A U.S. Commercial Service Market Research Library containing more than 100,000 industry and country-specific market reports, web sites, events, and trade directory listings. Included Reports: Country Commercial Guides, Industry Sector Analyses, Marketing Insights, Multilateral Development Bank Reports, Best Markets, and other Industry/Regional Reports.

EConflict, World Encyclopedia and Simulation: Nations of the World -- Prepared by EmulateMe, a Web-design company. Provides maps, history, weather, geography, and governmental and economic information. Offers audio versions of the national anthems and images of the flags for each country. The site contains economic, geographic and demographic data. There is also a discussion forum for users to "speak out" about current world affairs.

Handbook of International Economic Statistics -- Released by the CIA. Provides statistics for comparing the economic performance of major countries and regions. Includes economic profiles, trends, energy, agriculture, foreign trade and aid, and real gross domestic product. It also includes a collection of maps and charts and tables. Also available in print at MGT/ECON/GOV/ INFO Reference PREX3.16

International Monetary Fund -- Country Information by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Library of Congress Country Studies/Area Handbook -- Prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress, contains studies of 100 countries.

The World Bank Group Country Data -- This site provides a wide rage of economic and development indicators for 190 countries. "The headings are: poverty and social, key economic ratios and long term trends, structure of the economy, prices and government finance, trade, balance of payments, and external debt and resource flows. Charts such as the "development diamond" make it easy to see the relationships between indicators and among countries" Requires Adobe Acrobat. Maintained by the World Bank.

Each issue provides a solid analysis of developments in the subject country, special reports on topics of current interest, and extensive statistical information. Foreign Economic Trends and their Implications to the United States -- U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration.

International Financial Statistics -- Publishes current data on exchange rates, international liquidity, international banking, money and banking, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions (including balance of payments and international investment position), government finance, and national accounts. Information is presented in tables for specific countries. We also own the Yearbook.
